Why Are We Adding Holds to Check Deposits?

Why Are We Adding Holds to Check Deposits? Check fraud is rising at an alarming rate, and credit unions everywhere are being targeted. To protect every member’s accounts, we are now enforcing Regulation CC (Reg CC) on all check deposits—including mobile and remote deposits. We know this may feel inconvenient if you’ve never experienced a hold before, but these safeguards are essential to prevent fraud losses that impact the entire membership.

What Does This Mean for You? Reg CC sets federal timelines for when deposited checks must be made available. Here’s what to expect:

  • First $275 of any check: available next business day
  • Checks over $6,725: initial amount released, remainder may take up to 7 business days
  • Extended holds may apply for new accounts, repeated overdrafts, or concerns about check validity

If you have a large deposit, consider visiting us in person at 6103 N. Astor St., Spokane, WA, or a Shared Branch location. In-person deposits allow us to inspect the check and may help release funds sooner.

Why This Matters Fraudsters exploit fast access to funds. By applying Reg CC holds, we’re protecting your money and the financial health of our credit union—even if it means a short delay. If you believe your funds should have been released, call us at 509-838-8960. We’ll review and resolve any issues promptly.
